Sage Checker Garden Dress Crochet Pattern

Table of Contents
This sage checker dress is the kind of project that makes everyone ask whether you really made it yourself. The lattice checker stitch builds open windows that catch the light, the A-line skirt moves beautifully, and an ivory hem band finishes it cleanly with no fussy colourwork at all.
We will work the dress as flat panels: a front and back bodice plus six skirt panels, all in one simple stitch recipe of double crochet blocks alternating with chain-3 windows. The panels are blocked, seamed, gathered to the waist, and finished with a side zipper and a sage tie belt. It is a single-size pattern, so your gauge swatch does the sizing work.
The recipe is written with N as the number of horizontal motif repeats in a piece. A row with N repeats always contains 3N+1 dc and N ch-3 spaces, so you can check your count on every single row.

Abbreviations
- ch: chain
- sc: single crochet
- dc: double crochet
- sl st: slip stitch
- st/sts: stitch / stitches
- sp: space
- RS: right side
- WS: wrong side
- BLO: back loop only

Special Stitches
- Lattice repeat: one repeat is ch 3 followed by 3 dc. Each row starts with one edge dc, and the beginning ch 3 counts as the first dc. Keep the blocks positioned above the blocks below to form square window columns.
- Sc2tog (for neckline corners): pull up a loop in each of 2 stitches, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops.
Gauge & Size
- Finished bust: about 100 cm, to fit a body bust of 90 to 94 cm with 6 to 10 cm ease; untied waist 100 cm, cinched with the belt to 80 to 90 cm
- Bodice shoulder-to-waist: 40 cm; skirt length: 58 cm; sleeveless
- Gauge: 4 lattice repeats and 10 rows = 10 x 10 cm blocked; one repeat is about 2.50 cm wide. Border gauge: 20 sc and 24 sc rows = 10 cm
- Construction: flat panels (2 bodice, 6 skirt), blocked and seamed, skirt gathered to the bodice waist, side zipper, tie belt
- Skill level: Intermediate to Advanced
- Swatch: work the stitch recipe with N = 8 for at least 20 rows, wet-block, dry flat 24 hours, then hang 12 hours to check for cotton growth before measuring
The Lattice Stitch Recipe
Foundation: Ch 6N+4.
Row 1 (foundation row): Dc in 4th ch from hook; (ch 3, skip 3 ch, dc in each of next 3 ch) N times. The skipped three turning chains do not count on this row. (3N+1 dc and N spaces)
Row 2 (and all plain rows): Ch 3, turn, skip first dc; dc in each of next 2 dc; (ch 3, skip ch-3 space, dc in each of next 3 dc) N-1 times; ch 3, skip last space, dc in final edge dc. (3N+1 dc, N spaces)
Row 3 (mirror row): Ch 3, turn, skip first edge dc; (ch 3, skip space, dc in each of next 3 dc) N times. (3N+1 dc, N spaces)
Alternate Rows 2 and 3 throughout, and never mistake a ch-3 window for a turning chain.
Back Bodice
With sage and the 3.5mm hook, work the foundation with N = 20, working upward from the waist.
Row 1: Work the foundation row. (20 lattice repeats)
Rows 2 to 37: Work the next plain recipe row, alternating Row 2 and Row 3 of the recipe. (20 lattice repeats per row)
After Row 37, mark the central 8 repeats as the back neck opening and leave them unworked. Work each shoulder separately over the outer 6 repeats, restarting yarn at the outer or neck edge as the row direction requires.
Rows 38 to 40 (each shoulder): Continue the recipe over the outer 6 repeats only. (6 lattice repeats per shoulder)
Fasten off with 20 cm tails.
Front Bodice
Begin as for the back with N = 20, in one panel with no centre front opening.
Row 1: Work the foundation row. (20 lattice repeats)
Rows 2 to 35: Work the next plain recipe row. (20 lattice repeats per row)
After Row 35, leave the central 8 repeats unworked for the boat neckline and work each shoulder separately over 6 repeats.
Rows 36 to 40 (each shoulder): Continue the next recipe row over this shoulder only. (6 lattice repeats per shoulder)
Fasten off with 20 cm tails.
Skirt Panels (Make 6)
Work from the waist downward, starting with N = 12. Each panel measures 30 cm wide; assembled, the combined 180 cm top gathers to the 100 cm bodice waist for the A-line fullness.
Row 1: Work the foundation row. (12 lattice repeats)
Rows 2 to 56: Work the next plain recipe row in sage. (12 lattice repeats per row)
Rows 57 to 58: Change to ivory and work the next plain recipe row. (12 lattice repeats per row)
Checkpoint: block all six panels to 58 cm length, within one row of tolerance; width should be 30 cm each.
Waist Tie Belt
With the 3.0mm hook and sage yarn:
Belt Row 1: Ch 8; sc in 2nd chain and next 6 chains. (7 sc)
Belt Row 2 (and every following row): Ch 1, turn, sc in BLO in each stitch. (7 sc per row)
Continue until the belt measures 160 cm; record your row total, since row gauge varies. The finished belt should measure 160 x about 3.5 cm; do not stretch it while measuring.
Finishing & Assembly
Shoulders: mattress-stitch the corresponding shoulder edges, aligning 6 complete motifs on each seam. (2 shoulder seams)
Armholes: leave the top 20 cm of each front/back side edge unseamed. (2 armholes)
Sides: sew from waist to armhole on the right side. On the left side, leave the 40 cm zipper opening through the bodice and continuing into the skirt as needed. (2 side seams, 1 zipper opening)
Skirt: align equal row ends and mattress-stitch the six panels into a ring, keeping the left-side zipper gap.
Waist: quarter-mark both the bodice and the skirt. Run two gathering threads through the skirt foundation loops, draw the skirt to 100 cm matching the quarter marks, and sew it to the bodice waist. Sew the stabilising cotton tape inside the waist without stretching.
Zipper: hand-baste, then backstitch the zipper tapes to the inside of the left opening, keeping the teeth clear of crochet loops and securing the top and lower stops.
Neckline border Round 1: with ivory and the 3.0mm hook, join at the back neck and sc evenly around, working about 2 sc per dc-row end and 1 sc per stitch, adjusting at steps to lie flat and working sc2tog across square inside corners. Join with sl st and record your stitch count as E.
Neckline border Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc, join. Maintain E sc if the edge lies flat.
Hem border Round 1: sc evenly along the lower edge without drawing it in, placing one sc per dc and one per chain, and not counting seam loops twice. Record the count as H.
Hem border Rounds 2 to 8: Ch 1, sc in BLO in every sc; join. (H sc per round)
Armhole border Round 1: sc evenly around each opening, using about 2 sc per row end; join. Record the count as C for each opening.
Armhole border Round 2: Sc in each sc for a plain edge. (C sc)
Weave in all ends through at least 5 cm of solid stitches, reversing direction twice, and trim only after the first wash. Soak the dress as the yarn label directs, press between towels, lay flat to finished measurements, then hang for 12 hours and re-measure before deciding on any shortening, because cotton can grow in wear. This is an openwork dress, so wear it with an opaque slip.
Tips
Gauge is the single most important step in this dress. If it is off, the dress will not fit, and no amount of blocking will fix it.
Block as you go: bodice panels before joining the shoulders, skirt panels before assembling. Seaming is easier and the measurements stay honest.
Do not skip the waist tape; the cotton tape inside the waist seam stops the heavy skirt stretching the waistline out over time.
Practice the zipper on scrap fabric first if you have never set one into crochet. The key is keeping the teeth clear of the crochet loops.
