Crochet Granny Square Christmas Stocking Charms Pattern

Table of Contents
Mini stockings might be my favorite kind of holiday crochet: all the charm of the real thing, finished in a fraction of the time. This sweet little charm starts as one simple granny square, and then a clever diagonal fold turns it into a tiny 3D stocking with an open top, just right for hiding a chocolate or two.
It measures about 8.5 cm long and 5 cm wide, so it works beautifully as a tree ornament, an advent calendar pouch, a gift tag accent, or strung along a garland. The color changes each round give it that classic patchwork look, and the shaping really does feel like a little magic trick the first time you fold it.

Granny Square Pattern
Foundation Ring: Chain 4 ch, then work 1 sl st into the first chain to form a small ring loop.
Round 1 (Green): Chain 3 ch (counts as 1 dc), then work 2 dc into the center ring. [Chain 2, 3 dc into the ring] repeat 3 times total. Chain 2, then join with a sl st into the 3rd chain of the beginning chain-3. Fasten off green yarn.
Round 2 (Red): Join red yarn into any corner chain-2 space, chain 3 ch (counts as 1 dc), work 2 dc, chain 2, 3 dc all in that same corner space. [Chain 2, work (3 dc, chain 2, 3 dc) in the next corner space] repeat 3 times around. Join with a sl st into the 3rd starting chain, then fasten off red yarn.
Round 3 (White): Join white yarn into any corner space, chain 3 ch (counts as 1 dc), work 2 dc, chain 2, 3 dc in the same corner space. In the side space between corner clusters, work 3 dc. In the next corner space, work (3 dc, chain 2, 3 dc). Continue this pattern around to give the square its expanding border. Join with a sl st into the 3rd starting chain, and fasten off white yarn.
Shaping the Stocking
Round 4 (Yellow or Light Green): Join border yarn into a corner chain-2 space, chain 1 ch, and work 1 sc in that same space.
Work 1 sc into each of the next 9 stitches across the top edge.
Work 1 sc into the next corner space.
Fold the square piece diagonally, front to back, to align the corresponding sides for seaming.
Work 1 sl st to link the folded edges together, then chain 10 ch; this forms the hanging loop at the top back cuff.
Secure the loop back down with 1 sc into the same corner space.
Continue single crocheting down the side seam edge to connect the layers: work 9 sc down the side.
In the bottom corner space (the toe curve), work 3 sc to turn smoothly.
Work 8 sc along the final bottom/foot edge to close the base of the stocking.
Join with a sl st, fasten off, and weave in all loose yarn ends safely inside the pocket of the stocking.
Tips
- Change colors cleanly at each fasten-off so the patchwork rounds stay crisp.
- Stuff the finished stocking with chocolates or small treats to use it as a gift or advent pouch.
- Make a matching set in the same four colors for a coordinated garland or tree set.
