These tiny wreaths make me so happy, they are quick, colourful, and you can use them in a dozen different ways! Two curled spiral strips twist together into a sweet two-tone ring, and a little bow on top finishes the whole thing.

At about 2 inches across, a finished wreath is just right as a keychain, a bag charm, a Christmas tree ornament, or the prettiest little gift tag. I love a good stash-busting project, and this one uses the smallest scraps of red, white and green.

The curl does all the work for you, the more single crochets you pack into each chain, the tighter your spiral twists. Let us make one together!

Materials

  • Fine or sport weight, or light worsted, 4-ply cotton or acrylic yarn in Colour A: red (or green)
  • Yarn in Colour B: white
  • Yarn in Colour C: green (or red, for the bow)
  • 2.0 mm to 2.5 mm crochet hook
  • Tapestry or yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun or craft fabric glue, optional
  • Keychain strap or phone cord loop with jump ring

Abbreviations

  • ch: chain stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • MR: magic ring / magic circle

Gauge & Size

  • Finished size: approximately 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter
  • Ideal for keychains, bag charms and Christmas tree ornaments
  • Construction: two identical curled spiral strips twisted together into a ring, plus a mini bow
  • Work in flat foundation chains, the multiple increases in every chain make the strips curl on their own

First Spiral Strip Pattern

Make the first strip in red yarn.

Row 1: Chain 51 stitches with red yarn.

Row 2: Starting in the 2nd chain from the hook, work 3 single crochets into the same stitch.

Row 2 continued: Repeat 3 sc into each stitch across the remaining 49 chains. You will end up with 150 single crochets total.

Fasten off by pulling the tail through the last loop on your hook, and cut the yarn with scissors.

Gently twist the spiralled strip with your fingers to ensure it forms a tight curled strand.

Second Spiral Strip Pattern

Repeat the same steps as the first strip, this time using white yarn.

Row 1: Chain 51 stitches with white yarn.

Row 2: Starting in the 2nd chain from the hook, work 3 sc into each stitch for the next 50 chains. Total: 150 single crochets.

Fasten off the yarn, cut it, and twist the strip into a spiral.

Mini Bow Pattern

Make the bow in green or red yarn.

Make a magic ring: wrap the yarn to form a loop and secure it with a slip knot on your hook.

First bow wing: Chain 3. Work 3 double crochets into the magic ring. Chain 3 again, then slip stitch into the ring to close the wing.

Second bow wing: Chain 3. Work 3 dc into the ring. Chain 3, then sl st into the magic ring.

Secure the bow centre: Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch yarn tail.

Pull the magic ring tail tightly to close the centre hole completely.

Wrap the yarn tail around the middle of the bow 3 to 4 times to form the knot. Tie off on the back side securely and trim any excess yarn.

Finishing & Assembly

Intertwine the spirals: Take both the red and white spiral strips and align their tips together at one end. Carefully thread and interlock the two spiralled strips so they twist around each other into a single two-colour tube.

Form the wreath ring: Bend the twisted tube into a circular shape, meeting both ends at the bottom.

Secure the ends: Use hot glue, or stitch along the two ends, to fuse them together securely.

Attach the bow: Apply a small dab of hot glue to the back of the mini bow and press it firmly over the seam where the two ends of the wreath meet.

Add the hardware: Loop a keychain cord or jump ring through the top centre of the wreath, behind the bow.

Tips

Keep your tension even while working the 3 single crochets into each chain, so the spiral twists uniformly.

The piece will curl into a tight spiral automatically as you crochet. You can gently twirl it along its natural curl once it is finished to help the twist.

Leave a short tail when finishing each piece to help tie or secure the ends before gluing.

For a sturdier charm, use a thicker cotton or acrylic yarn, or go down a hook size for tighter stitches. Try green and white strips with a red bow for a traditional evergreen look, or red and white strips with a green bow for a candy cane style.
