Crochet Bell Flower Garland Free Pattern

A plain string of yarn does not ask to be noticed, but this one does! I love this crochet bell flower garland: a long sage green vine dotted with small bell flowers in blush pink, ivory cream and soft peach, with tiny pointed leaves tucked in along the way. It is the kind of piece that turns a bare mirror frame or an empty shelf edge into something that looks like it was always meant to be there.

Every flower and leaf is made separately first, then joined directly onto the vine with your hook as you crochet it, so there is no sewing at the end. That is my favourite detail, because every join is a real crochet stitch instead of a knot hidden on the back, and the whole garland stays clean and neat.

The finished garland drapes to about 30 inches long, light enough to hang from a single pin or loop over a frame corner. We will make 9 flowers and 14 leaves, then build the vine and join everything as we go.

Materials

  • About 40 yards of fingering or sport weight cotton thread in sage green, for the vine and all 14 leaves
  • About 10 yards of fingering or sport weight cotton thread in blush pink, for 3 flowers
  • About 10 yards of fingering or sport weight cotton thread in ivory cream, for 3 flowers
  • About 8 yards of fingering or sport weight cotton thread in soft peach, for 3 flowers
  • 2.5mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle, for weaving in ends
  • Small sharp scissors
  • A few straight pins or locking stitch markers, to mark the attachment points

Abbreviations

  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • inc: increase, 2 sc in the same stitch
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • rnd: round
  • rep: repeat
  • MR: magic ring

Gauge & Size

  • Finished size: garland about 30 inches long, each flower about 1 inch, each leaf about 0.75 inch
  • Construction: 9 flowers and 14 leaves made separately, then joined onto a single vine as you crochet it
  • Skill level: Intermediate

Bell Flower Pattern (Make 9)

Make 9 flowers in total: 3 in blush pink, 3 in ivory cream and 3 in soft peach. Every flower uses the same pattern; just change the colour. With your flower colour, work a magic ring.

Rnd 1: 5 sc in the ring. (5 sts)

Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. (10 sts)

Rnd 3: (Sc 1, inc) rep 5 times. (15 sts)

Rnd 4: Sc around. This round builds the height of the bell shape. (15 sts)

Rnd 5: (Sl st in next st, (sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc) all in next st, skip next st) rep 5 times around. (5 scalloped petal points made)

Fasten off, leaving a 6 inch tail. This tail is what you will use to join the flower onto the vine, so do not trim it.

Leaf Pattern (Make 14)

Make 14 leaves in total, all in sage green. Chain 7.

Rnd 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next 2 ch, hdc in next ch, 3 sc in last ch (this turns the pointed tip). Working back down the other side of the same starting chain: hdc in next ch, dc in next 2 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in last ch.

Fasten off, leaving a 6 inch tail on every leaf, for the same joining reason as the flowers.

Vine & Joining

Before you crochet a single stitch of the vine, lay your 9 finished flowers and 14 finished leaves out on the table in the order you plan to attach them, alternating colours so no two same-coloured flowers sit right next to each other. Mark 14 attachment points evenly along the planned 30 inch length: 9 points get both a flower and a leaf side by side, and the remaining 5 points get a leaf on its own.

With sage green, chain until your cord measures about 4 inches. This is the tail end of the garland before your first flower. Now work back down the same chain: sl st in each ch across, all the way back to your starting slip knot. This second pass turns a floppy chain into a firmer, slightly corded vine. Do not fasten off.

At your first marked point, chain 2, then insert your hook down through the center top of your first flower and sl st to join it in place, right at the top where its fastening tail comes out. Weave that flower’s tail up into the join now, while it is still easy to reach. Chain 2 more, then join a leaf the same way, right next to the flower.

Chain about 2 inches of vine, working sl st back down the chain as before, until you reach your next marked point. If this point holds a leaf only, chain 2 and join the leaf the same way. Keep alternating: a flower point gets chain 2, join flower, chain 2, join leaf; a leaf-only point gets chain 2 and join. Continue across all 14 points until every flower and leaf is attached.

Finishing & Assembly

Once your last flower or leaf is joined, chain about 4 inches more of plain vine for the tail end, work back down it in sl st as before, then fasten off.

Go back through the entire length and weave in every remaining tail, checking the back of the vine as you go. Nothing should show from the front. With 9 flowers and 14 leaves there are quite a few ends, so take your time here; it is what makes the finished garland look polished.

Tips

Lay out your colour order before you start joining, not while you are mid-vine. Decision fatigue is real by flower number six!

Join with the same tension you would use for a regular slip stitch seam. Joining too tightly is what makes a flower sit crooked instead of hanging naturally.

Do not skip the second pass on the vine. A plain single chain looks thin and flat compared with the corded look, and the slip stitch pass back down is what gives it body.

To make the garland longer or shorter, add or remove attachment points in pairs so your colour pattern still balances, and adjust your yarn amounts to match. Spot clean only with a barely damp cloth, and store the garland loosely coiled rather than folded so the vine does not crease.

Materials

Steps

  1. Crochet 9 bell flowers, 3 in each colour, in 5 rounds each
  2. Crochet 14 sage green leaves
  3. Lay out the flowers and leaves in colour order and mark 14 attachment points
  4. Work the sage vine as a chain with a slip stitch pass back down for a corded look
  5. Join each flower and leaf onto the vine with slip stitches as you reach its point
  6. Finish with a plain vine tail, fasten off and weave in all ends
Tips:
  • Decide your colour order before you start joining, not mid-vine
  • Join with regular slip stitch tension so flowers hang naturally instead of crooked
  • Never trim a tail before weaving it in fully
  • Keep the scalloped flower round relaxed so the 5 petal points flare open
