Most ornament patterns hand you one shape and ask you to make five identical copies. Pretty, yes, but a tree looks so much more styled when the ornaments actually belong together. That is why I adore this little set: a mini gift box, a mini stocking, and a bobble pinecone, all worked in the same three colours and the same weight of yarn, so they hang side by side like they were always meant to be a family.

None of the three asks for anything beyond stitches most crocheters already know, and each one takes about ninety minutes or less. The gift box is six flat squares sewn into a cube. The stocking is two flat panels sewn together with a contrast cuff. And the pinecone, my favourite, is worked in the round with five staggered rows of bobble stitch.

Keep the colours consistent, count those stocking toe rows carefully, and let the bobble stitch build its texture round by round. I cannot wait to see your set hanging on your tree!

Materials

  • Worsted weight (#4) yarn, Burgundy about 80 yd for gift box body and pinecone body
  • Worsted weight yarn, Sage about 35 yd for stocking body
  • Worsted weight yarn, Cream about 15 yd for ribbon, cuff and hanging loops
  • 4 mm (US G-6) crochet hook
  • Polyester fiberfill stuffing, small amount
  • Natural wood bead, 1 per pinecone, about 16 mm
  • Thin natural jute twine, about 14 in per pinecone
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch marker
  • Scissors and measuring tape

Abbreviations

  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • inc: increase, two sc worked into the same stitch
  • dec: invisible decrease, worked over the next two stitches
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • MR: magic ring

Special Stitches

Bobble stitch: Yarn over, insert the hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on the hook, leaving 2 loops on the hook. Repeat that sequence 4 more times into the same stitch, for 5 partial double crochets total. Yarn over one final time and pull through all 6 loops on the hook.

Gauge & Size

  • Gauge: 6 sc and 6 rows = 1 in for the flat pieces
  • Gift box: about 2 in cube
  • Stocking: about 1.7 in wide by 2.7 in tall including the cuff
  • Pinecone: about 3 to 3.5 in tall, not counting the bead and hanger
  • Skill level: Easy to Intermediate

Gift Box Pattern

Make 6 squares, all in Burgundy.

Row 1: CH 13, sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. (12 sc)

Row 2: CH 1, turn, sc in each st across. (12 sc)

Rows 3 to 12: Repeat Row 2 ten more times, for 12 rows total. (12 sc each row)

Fasten off, leaving a 6 in tail. Repeat five more times, for six identical squares total.

Stocking Pattern

Make 2 panels, both in Sage.

Row 1: CH 11, sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. (10 sc)

Row 2: CH 1, turn, sc in each st across. (10 sc)

Rows 3 to 10: Repeat Row 2 eight more times, for 10 rows total. (10 sc each row)

Row 11: CH 1, turn, sc in the first 9 sts, leaving the last st unworked. (9 sc)

Row 12: CH 1, turn, sc in the first 8 sts, leaving the last st unworked. (8 sc)

Row 13: CH 1, turn, sc in the first 7 sts, leaving the last st unworked. (7 sc)

Row 14: CH 1, turn, sc in the first 6 sts, leaving the last st unworked. (6 sc)

Fasten off, leaving a 6 in tail. Repeat for the second panel, matching it exactly.

Cuff Round 1: With Cream, join at the top opening and sc evenly around the entire top opening, working into both the front panel’s 10 sts and the back panel’s 10 sts. Join with a sl st. (20 sc)

Cuff Round 2: Sc in each st around. Join with a sl st. (20 sc)

Fasten off. With Cream, CH 8 and join with a sl st to the first ch to form a small ring, then sew the loop to the top back corner of the cuff.

Pinecone Pattern

Worked in Burgundy, from the top down, in a continuous spiral. Place a marker in the first stitch of every round.

Round 1: 6 sc in MR. (6)

Round 2: Inc in each st around. (12)

Round 3: [Sc in next st, inc] 6 times. (18)

Round 4: [Sc in next 2 sts, inc] 6 times. (24)

Round 5: [Sc in next 3 sts, inc] 6 times. (30)

Round 6: [Bobble in next st, sc in next 4 sts] 6 times. (30)

Round 7: Sc in each st around. (30)

Round 8: [Sc in next 2 sts, bobble in next st, sc in next 2 sts] 6 times. (30)

Round 9: Sc in each st around. (30)

Round 10: [Sc in next 4 sts, bobble in next st] 6 times. (30)

Round 11: [Dec, sc in next 3 sts] 6 times. (24)

Round 12: [Sc in next st, bobble in next st, sc in next 2 sts] 6 times. (24)

Round 13: [Sc in next 2 sts, dec] 6 times. (18)

Round 14: [Bobble in next st, sc in next 2 sts] 6 times. (18)

Round 15: [Sc in next st, dec] 6 times. (12)

Round 16: Dec 6 times. (6)

Fasten off, leaving a 6 in tail. Thread the tail through the front loops of the remaining 6 sts, pull tight to close, and weave in the end.

Finishing & Assembly

Gift box: Sew four squares together along their side edges to form a tube, sew one square to one open end to close the bottom, sew the sixth square to the remaining open end leaving one edge unsewn, add fiberfill, then sew closed. With Cream, make a chain about 20 in long, wrap it around the cube, tie a bow at the top centre, and tack it in place. With Cream, CH 8, join to form a ring, and sew it to the top back corner.

Stocking: Hold the two panels with right sides facing out, sew around the side and angled toe edges with Sage, and leave the straight top edge open for the cuff.

Pinecone hanger: Cut 14 in of jute twine, fold it in half, thread both ends through the wooden bead, pass both ends through the centre of the top cap from the outside, tie a firm double knot inside, and add stuffing before working Rounds 15 and 16.

Tips

Stuff the gift box and pinecone lightly rather than firmly so the stitches do not stretch.

Weave in ends as each piece is finished instead of saving all three for the end.

Work all six gift box squares in one sitting so tension stays matching.

Do not lose your round marker on the pinecone, it is worked in a continuous spiral with no seam.
