This sweet child-size dress is pure night-sky magic! A fitted single crochet bodice, two little spaghetti straps, and a dramatically full skirt that starts with one big release increase β€” then a whole constellation of gold, silver, and white stars and moons sewn on at the end.

We work the dress from the top edge down in joined rounds. The bodice is a straightforward single crochet tube with gentle increases, the straps are simple chains worked back in single crochet, and the skirt flows in back-loop half double crochet through three color zones: deep navy, violet, and silver gray at the hem. The whole project takes about 14 to 18 hours.

The finished dress fits a child size 4 to 5, measuring 22 inches around the chest, 24 inches at the waist, 19 inches in total length, and about 72 inches of skirt sweep, with 1 to 2 inches of positive ease at the chest.

Materials

  • 660 yards DK weight yarn in navy-to-silver gradient, or three coordinated solids (navy, violet, silver gray)
  • 50 yards DK weight yarn in gold, for appliques
  • 35 yards DK weight yarn in silver, for appliques, plus a small amount of white
  • 4.0mm crochet hook (US G/6) for the dress
  • 3.5mm crochet hook (US E/4) for the appliques
  • Stitch markers
  • Yarn needle and scissors
  • Measuring tape and blocking pins
  • 0.25 inch elastic for inside the top edge (optional)

Abbreviations

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • sc2tog: single crochet two together
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • BLO: back loop only
  • inc: increase, 2 stitches in the same stitch
  • st/sts: stitch / stitches

Special Stitches

  • Back-Loop Half Double Crochet: yarn over, insert your hook under the back loop only, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops. This gives the skirt its subtle ribbed texture.
  • Invisible Join: cut the yarn and pull the tail through the last stitch. Thread the tail on a needle, insert it under both loops of the first stitch of the round, then back down through the center of the last stitch, and pull gently to mimic a stitch.

Gauge & Size

  • Finished size: child size 4 to 5; chest 22 inches, waist 24 inches, total length 19 inches, skirt sweep about 72 inches
  • Bodice gauge: 18 sc and 20 joined rounds = 4 inches after blocking
  • Skirt gauge: 18 hdc and 15 joined rounds = 4 inches after blocking
  • Construction: top-down in joined rounds; bodice in sc, skirt in BLO hdc after a 3-to-1 release increase; appliques made separately and sewn on
  • Skill level: Intermediate

Bodice Pattern

With navy yarn and the 4.0mm hook, chain 100 and join with a slip stitch to the first chain, being careful not to twist. The ch 1 at the start of sc rounds does not count as a stitch, and each round is joined with a sl st to the first stitch. Place a marker in the first stitch of each round and move it up as you go.

Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each chain around. Join. (100 sc)

Rounds 2 to 8: Ch 1, sc in each stitch around. Join. (100 sc each round)

Round 9: Ch 1, (sc in next 24 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch) 4 times. Join. (104 sc)

Rounds 10 to 17: Ch 1, sc in each stitch around. Join. (104 sc each round)

Round 18: Ch 1, (sc in next 25 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch) 4 times. Join. (108 sc)

Rounds 19 to 30: Ch 1, sc in each stitch around. Join. (108 sc each round)

At this point the bodice is about 6 inches tall and the waist measures about 24 inches around.

Straps Pattern

Lay the bodice flat with the seam at center back. Mark the front strap points 11 stitches in from each side edge, and mark the back strap points directly opposite, leaving 28 center-front stitches between the straps and 28 center-back stitches between them.

Join navy yarn at a front mark. Chain 34 for a 7.5 inch strap. Sl st to the matching back mark, turn, and work 34 sc back across the chain. Sl st to the front edge and fasten off. Repeat for the second strap. Try the bodice on the child and adjust by adding or removing chains before you work the single crochet return row.

Skirt Pattern

Round 31 (release increase): Change to dark navy or the start of your gradient. Ch 1, work 3 hdc in each stitch around. Join. (324 hdc)

Rounds 32 to 46 (deep sky): Ch 1, hdc in BLO of each stitch around. Join. (324 hdc each round)

Rounds 47 to 58 (violet transition): Continue the gradient or change to muted violet. Ch 1, hdc in BLO of each stitch around. Join. (324 hdc each round)

Rounds 59 to 76 (silver horizon): Continue the gradient or change to silver gray. Ch 1, hdc in BLO of each stitch around. Join. (324 hdc each round)

Round 77 (hem): Ch 1, sc in each stitch around. Join. (324 sc)

Round 78 (hem): Ch 1, (sc in next 9 stitches, ch 3, sl st in first chain made for a picot, sc in next 9 stitches) 18 times. Join with an invisible join. (324 sc plus 18 picots)

After the hem rounds, the skirt length from the waist is about 12.25 inches.

Appliques Pattern

Make all the appliques before sewing so you can play with placement: 18 small stars, 8 mini stars, 3 crescent moons, and 1 larger moon, in gold, silver, and white. Scatter them densely on the upper right bodice and taper them down the skirt, leaving the back quieter, with at least 1.5 inches between the larger motifs.

Small Star: with the 3.5mm hook, make a magic ring.

Round 1: Ch 1, 10 sc in ring. Join. (10 sc)

Round 2: (Ch 3, sc in 2nd chain from hook, hdc in next chain, skip next sc on ring, sl st in next sc) 5 times. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Mini Star: make a magic ring.

Round 1: (Ch 2, sl st in ring) 5 times. Pull the ring tight and fasten off with a long tail.

Crescent Moon: chain 16.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd chain from hook, hdc in next 2 chains, dc in next 7 chains, hdc in next 2 chains, sc in last 3 chains. (15 sts)

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sl st in first 2 stitches, sc in next 2 stitches, hdc in next 3 stitches, dc in next 4 stitches, hdc in next 2 stitches, sc in next stitch, sl st in last stitch. (15 sts)

Fasten off. For the Large Moon, work the crescent moon pattern with the 4.0mm hook and add one extra row of surface slip stitch along the outer curve for a bolder shape.

Finishing & Assembly

Pin every applique before sewing. Place the largest crescent on the right bodice, one crescent on the lower left skirt, one on the lower right skirt, and the large moon near the skirt front. Sew the appliques with matching thread or yarn tails using small whipstitches around each edge.

Weave in all ends on the wrong side, splitting yarn plies where possible for security. Steam block lightly or wet block flat to measurements, and do not stretch the top edge wider than gauge. If you like, sew soft elastic inside the top edge, stretching it only enough to stabilize the neckline.

Tips

For a different chest size, begin with any even stitch count that matches the desired top circumference at 18 sc per 4 inches, and adjust the waist by multiples of 4.

For a softer A-line skirt instead of the full release, work 2 hdc per bodice stitch in Round 31 instead of 3.

If your appliques curl, block them under a damp cloth before sewing, and use fewer stitches around tight curves.

Hand wash, or machine wash cold on delicate inside a garment bag, and lay flat to dry without wringing.
