There is nothing cozier than a soft, squishy stocking hanging by the fireplace, and this plush version is a dream to crochet. I am Amy, and I love that it uses super chunky chenille-style yarn and a big hook β€” the rounds fly by, the heel is shaped with simple rows, and that folded ribbed cuff finishes it beautifully.

Fill it with small treats, hang it as dΓ©cor, or gift it to someone special. Worked mostly in single crochet in a spiral, it is a relaxing make even if this is your first stocking.

Materials

  • Super chunky weight yarn β€” plush or chenille baby yarn, such as Bernat Blanket yarn β€” in toe, main body, heel and cuff colours
  • 7 mm or 8 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Abbreviations

  • sc = single crochet
  • inc = increase (2 stitches in the same stitch)
  • sc dec = single crochet decrease
  • ch = chain
  • BLO = back loop only

Gauge & Size

  • Gauge: not stated; work in a spiral unless stated otherwise
  • Finished size: a soft, plush Christmas stocking sized by your chunky yarn and 7–8 mm hook
  • Stitches used: single crochet, increase, single crochet decrease

Stocking Pattern

The Toe (Toe Colour)

Round 1: Make a magic ring, work 12 sc into the ring. (12 sts)

Round 2: (Inc in first st, 1 sc in next st) repeat 6 times. (18 sts)

Round 3: (Inc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts) repeat 6 times. (24 sts)

Round 4: (Inc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts) repeat 6 times. (30 sts)

The Foot and Leg (Main Body Colour)

Rounds 5–7: Work 1 sc in each stitch around. (30 sc)

Change to main body colour yarn.

Rounds 8–18: Work 1 sc in each stitch around. (30 sc)

The Heel (Heel Colour)

Unravel the last 6 stitches of Round 18. Attach heel colour yarn.

Row 1: Work 1 sc in next 15 sts.

Row 2: Turn (no chain). Work 1 sc across. (15 sc)

Row 3: Turn, skip 1st st, 1 sc in next 11 sts, sc dec over last 2 sts.

Row 4: Turn, skip 1st st, 1 sc in next 8 sts, sc dec over last 2 sts. (11 sts)

Row 5: Ch 1, turn, inc in first st, 1 sc in next 9 sts, inc in last st. (13 sts)

Row 6: Ch 1, turn, inc in first st, 1 sc in next 11 sts, inc in last st. (15 sts)

Rows 7–8: Ch 1, turn, work 1 sc in each stitch across. (15 sc)

Seam the heel closed with whip stitch and turn right side out.

Resuming the Leg (Main Body Colour)

Round 19: Pull a loop through seam, ch 1. Work 15 sc across body, 14 sc across heel, and sc dec where heel meets body. (30 sts)

Rounds 20–30: Work 1 sc in each stitch around. (30 sc)

Slip stitch to finish off.

The Cuff (Cuff Colour)

Join yarn, ch 15 plus 1 turning chain.

Row 1: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, work 1 sc in each ch. (15 sc)

Slip stitch into next 2 unworked stitches on body.

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, work sc in back loop only (sc-BLO) across. (15 sc)

Repeat Rows 2–3 all around the stocking. (Work the ribbed cuff rows around the top opening as described, alternating the slip-stitch join and the BLO row.)

Finishing & Assembly

Sew or slip stitch the cuff ends together and fold the cuff down.

Add a small loop at the top for hanging.

Weave in all ends inside the stocking.

Tips

Keep a stitch marker in your spiral rounds β€” with plush yarn, the first stitch is easy to lose.

Go slowly through the heel rows and count to 15, 11, 13 and 15 as written; the shaping depends on those counts.

Plush yarn is forgiving, so do not worry about tiny imperfections β€” the finished stocking looks soft and cozy regardless.
