Sunset Gradient Floral Heart Halter Free Crochet Pattern

Table of Contents
If you can crochet a granny square, you can make this show-stopping halter top β I promise! The whole front is built from individual floral motifs and one heart motif that we join as we go, like puzzle pieces. No complicated shaping, no confusing increases in the round β just pretty little squares in a sunset gradient that flows from coral through peach to soft yellow and cream.
The finished top has a high halter neckline, an open back with tie closures at the neck and waist, a delicate scalloped hem, and cream tassels for that perfect boho finish. The panel is written for a 34 to 36 inch (86 to 91 cm) bust, about a size Small/Medium, measuring roughly 13 inches wide and 14 inches tall.
Plan for about 14 to 22 hours, motif by motif. It is not a weekend project, but that is exactly what makes it so easy to pick up and put down whenever you have a quiet half hour.

Special Stitches
- Puff stitch: (yarn over, insert hook into the indicated stitch or space, yarn over and pull up a loop to about 1/2 inch height) 3 times in the same stitch or space (7 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all 7 loops, ch 1 to close.
- 3dc cluster: yarn over, insert hook into the indicated stitch or space, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops remain), repeat 2 more times in the same stitch or space (4 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all 4 loops.
- 5dc cluster: work as the 3dc cluster but repeat the partial dc 5 times in total (6 loops on hook), then yarn over and pull through all 6 loops. Used for the large petal heads.
- Picot: ch 3, sl st into the first chain made, at the base of the ch-3.
- Shell: (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) all into the same stitch or space.
- V-stitch: (dc, ch 2, dc) all into the same stitch or space.
- Join as you go (JAYG): instead of a ch-2 corner space, work ch 1, sl st into the corresponding corner ch-2 space of the adjacent motif, ch 1. For side joins, instead of a ch-1 space between clusters, work ch 1, sl st into the corresponding side ch-1 space of the adjacent motif, ch 1.
- Tassel: cut 12 strands of C4, each 8 inches (20 cm) long, fold in half, insert the folded loop through the attachment point, pass all strand ends through the loop and pull tight, then trim evenly to about 3 inches (7.5 cm).
Gauge & Size
- Finished size: fits a 34 to 36 inch (86 to 91 cm) bust; front panel about 13 inches (33 cm) wide and 14 inches (35.5 cm) tall, halter straps add about 14 inches
- Gauge: one Large Floral Square Motif = 4 x 4 inches blocked; one Small Floral Square Motif = 2.5 x 2.5 inches blocked; Heart Center Motif = 4 x 4 inches blocked; 18 dc and 10 rows = 4 inches in dc mesh fabric
- Construction: 11 motifs (8 large floral squares, 2 small floral squares, 1 heart) joined as you go into a diamond panel, finished with lace filler triangles, a scallop border, neckline band, straps and ties
- Skill level: Advanced Intermediate
Colour assignment by motif row, counting from the top down: Row A (top neckline motif) in C1; Row B in C1 transitioning to C2; Row C (heart centre row) in C2; Row D in C3; Row E (bottom motif row) in C3 to C4; the lace fill and scallop border in C4. The right side is always facing for motif rounds unless I say otherwise.
Motif A: Large Floral Square
Make 8 in total, in the colours directed for each motif row. Each finished motif blocks to 4 x 4 inches.
Round 1: With the assigned colour, make a MR, ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), work 11 dc into the ring, join with a sl st to the top of the ch-3, pull the ring closed. (12 dc)
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in the same st, (ch 5, sk 2 dc, sc in the next dc) 3 times, ch 5, sk 2 dc, join with a sl st to the first sc. (4 sc, 4 ch-5 spaces)
Round 3: Sl st into a ch-5 space, in each ch-5 space work (sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc), join with a sl st to the first sc. (4 petals, 7 sts each = 28 sts)
Round 4: Working behind the petals, ch 1, sc into the same base sc of Round 2 (insert the hook from the back into the sc below the petal), (ch 7, sc into the next Round 2 sc from behind) 3 times, ch 7, join with a sl st to the first sc. (4 sc, 4 ch-7 spaces)
Round 5: Sl st into a ch-7 space, in each ch-7 space work (sc, hdc, dc, 2 tr, dc, hdc, sc), join with a sl st to the first sc. (4 large petals, 9 sts each = 36 sts)
Round 6: Working behind the large petals, ch 1, sc behind the Round 4 sc, (ch 9, sc behind the next Round 4 sc) 3 times, ch 9, join with a sl st. (4 sc, 4 ch-9 spaces)
Round 7: Sl st into a ch-9 space, work (sc, hdc, dc, tr, dtr, puff st, dtr, tr, dc, hdc, sc) in each ch-9 space, join with a sl st to the first sc. (4 large outer petals)
Round 8: Sl st into the gap between two petals (the natural gap at each corner of the flower), ch 4 (counts as dc plus ch 1), (3dc-cl, ch 3, 3dc-cl) in the same gap for a corner, ch 2, (3dc-cl, ch 2) twice along the side of the motif into the next petal gaps, then (3dc-cl, ch 3, 3dc-cl) into the next corner gap, repeat for the remaining corners, join with a sl st to the top of the ch-4. (16 clusters total: 8 corner clusters and 8 side clusters, 4 ch-3 corner spaces, 8 ch-2 spaces)
Round 9 (final square round): Sl st to the ch-3 corner space, ch 3 (dc), (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the same corner space, (ch 1, dc in the next ch-2 space, ch 1, dc in the next ch-2 space, ch 1, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in the corner ch-3 space) 3 times, ch 1, dc in the next ch-2 space, ch 1, dc in the next ch-2 space, ch 1, join with a sl st to the top of the ch-3. (4 corner ch-2 spaces, 6 dc along each side not counting corners)
Block each motif and check it measures exactly 4 x 4 inches before you move on β adjust your hook size now if it does not.
Motif B: Small Floral Square
Make 2, as filler motifs along the sides of the diamond panel. Each blocks to 2.5 x 2.5 inches.
Round 1: Make a MR, ch 3, work 7 dc into the ring, join with a sl st to the ch-3, pull the ring closed. (8 dc)
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in the same st, (ch 4, sk 1 dc, sc in the next dc) 3 times, ch 4, sk 1 dc, join with a sl st. (4 sc, 4 ch-4 spaces)
Round 3: Sl st into a ch-4 space, (sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc) in each ch-4 space, join. (4 petals)
Round 4: Working behind the petals, ch 1, sc behind each Round 2 sc, (ch 6, sc behind the next sc) 3 times, ch 6, join. (4 sc, 4 ch-6 spaces)
Round 5: Sl st into a ch-6 space, (sc, hdc, dc, tr, dc, hdc, sc) in each ch-6 space, join. (4 larger petals)
Round 6: Sl st to the corner gap between petals, ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the same gap, (ch 1, dc, ch 1, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the next corner gap, repeat for all 4 corners, join with a sl st. (4 corners, 4 side dc)
Motif C: Heart Centre
Make 1, in C2. It sits at the centre of motif Row C and is the focal point of the top. Finished size 4 x 4 inches blocked.
Round 1: Make a MR, ch 3, work 11 dc into the ring, join with a sl st to the ch-3, pull the ring closed. (12 dc)
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in the first st, (ch 3, sc in the next st) 11 times, ch 3, join. (12 sc, 12 ch-3 spaces)
Round 3: In each ch-3 space work (hdc, dc, hdc), join. (36 sts, forming a ruffled circle)
Round 4: Working behind the Round 3 stitches, sl st between the Round 2 sc posts from behind. Build the heart outline: sl st to the back of the work, (ch 5, sc into the Round 2 space 2 spaces forward) 5 times to form the right lobe of the heart top, then descend toward the centre point with (sc, ch 4) twice on the right side, ascend with (ch 4, sc) twice on the left side, then (ch 5, sc into a Round 2 space) 5 times to complete the left lobe, ch 5, join. (Approximately 12 arch spaces of varying chain lengths)
Round 5: Sl st into each ch-space and fill each space with dc clusters to define the heart: work 3 dc in each ch-5 space along the top lobes, 2 dc in each ch-4 space on the sides, and 1 hdc at the bottom centre point, join.
Round 6 (square frame): At each of the 4 implied corners of the motif (upper left, upper right, lower left, lower right), work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) for the corners, and along each side work dc and ch-1 spaces as needed to reach the next corner, join. (4 corner ch-2 spaces)
Panel Layout & Joining
The front panel is a diamond of 11 motifs. Row A (top point): 1 Large Floral Square in C1, placed on point so a corner points up. Row B: 2 Large Floral Squares in C2, joined to the lower left and lower right corners of Row A, plus the 2 Small Floral Motifs worked into the open triangular spaces on either side of Row A. Row C: the Heart Centre Motif in C2 in the middle, flanked by 2 Large Floral Squares in C2. Row D: 2 Large Floral Squares in C3. Row E (bottom point): 1 Large Floral Square, using C3 for the flower and C4 for the outer square round.
Join each new motif on its final square round using JAYG: replace each shared ch-1 side space with ch 1, sl st into the corresponding ch-1 space of the neighbour, ch 1, and each shared ch-2 corner with ch 1, sl st into the neighbour’s corner ch-2 space, ch 1. Work all joins on the right side and complete the whole final round of each motif, joining to neighbours as you meet them, in this order: Row A first (no join), then Row B left, Row B right, the two small fillers, the Heart, Row C left, Row C right, Row D left, Row D right, and finally Row E in the centre bottom.
After joining, the panel should measure about 13 inches (33 cm) wide across Row C and about 10 inches (25.5 cm) tall from the top corner of Row A to the bottom corner of Row E, before the border.
Lace Filler Triangles
Work a triangle filler in C4 into each open side space along the left and right edges of the panel β 4 fillers in total, 2 per side. Attach C4 to the outermost corner space of the upper motif on the edge.
Row 1 (WS): Ch 3 (dc), dc in each ch-1 space along the shared open edge to the corner of the lower motif, turn, and count the dc you made.
Row 2 (RS): Ch 3, dc in each ch-1 space across minus 1 space at the outer edge, turn. (1 fewer dc)
Row 3 (WS): Ch 3, dc across minus 1 space, turn.
Continue decreasing 1 space per row until 1 dc remains, then fasten off. Repeat, mirrored, for the other fillers.
Scallop Border
Round 1 (foundation): With C4 and the right side facing, attach at any stitch along the lower perimeter, ch 1, sc evenly around the entire perimeter of the panel (all sides except the top neckline edge), working 1 sc in each dc and 1 sc in each ch-1 space and 3 sc into each outer corner space, adjusting in the filler sections to reach a count divisible by 6, join with a sl st to the first sc. (Approximately 108 sc around the lower 3 sides)
Round 2 (scallop): Ch 1, (sk 2 sc, 5 dc in the next sc, sk 2 sc, sc in the next sc) around, join with a sl st to the first ch-1. (18 scallops)
Round 3 (scallop detail): Sl st to the top dc of the first shell (the 3rd dc of the 5-dc group), ch 1, sc in the same st, (ch 3, sc in the next shell top dc, ch 3, sc between the two shells into the sc below, ch 3, sc in the first dc of the next shell, ch 3, sc in the top dc of the same shell) around, join, fasten off.
The border adds about 1.5 to 2 inches (4 to 5 cm) of depth, bringing the full panel to about 14 inches tall.
Neckline Band & Straps
Row 1 (neckline band): Attach C1 to the top corner ch-2 space of the Row A motif, ch 1, sc in the corner space, then work sc across the top two sides of the Row A motif, working 1 sc per dc and 1 sc per ch-space. (Approximately 14 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across. (14 sc)
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in each sc to the last 2 sts, sc2tog. (12 sc)
Row 4: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc to the last 2 sts, sc2tog. (10 sc)
Row 5: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc to the last 2 sts, sc2tog. (8 sc)
Rows 6 to 7: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across. (8 sc)
This little collar should be about 1.5 inches tall and 3.5 inches wide at the base, tapering to 3 inches. For each halter strap, attach C1 to an outer corner of the collar, ch 1, and work 4 sc across the strap width, then work rows of sc back and forth with a ch-1 turning chain for about 12 inches (30.5 cm), or your desired strap length. Finish each strap with a 3-chain braided cord or a plain chain for 6 inches (15 cm) more as a tie tail, and fasten off. Repeat, mirrored, for the second strap β the ends pass behind the neck and tie together.
Attach one C4 tassel to each strap end where the strap meets the tie tail, made as described in Special Stitches.
Side Ties
Attach C1 to the side edge of the panel at Row C level (the widest point), ch 80 (approximately 15 inches / 38 cm), then sl st back along the chain for a rounded cord effect, and fasten off. Repeat on the opposite side β the two ties wrap around the back and tie at the centre back.
Add two shorter ties of ch 50 each at the lowest side edge points of the panel, where Row D meets the panel edge, for a second lower back tie at the waist. Attach one C4 tassel to the end of every tie.
Finishing & Assembly
Weave in all ends securely with your yarn needle, pulling each end in two directions before trimming β with cotton, ends need at least 1.5 inches woven in to stay put.
Wet block the finished top: soak it in cool water for 15 minutes, squeeze the water out gently in a towel without wringing, pin it to the specified measurements, and let it dry fully (12 to 24 hours). Blocking opens the lace, evens out the motif joins and defines those floral textures beautifully. Check the join points after blocking and reinforce any loose sl st join with a duplicate stitch in the join yarn.
To size up (38 to 40 inch bust), add one motif row to each side in Row C so that row is 5 motifs wide, and add one Row D motif on each side, recalculating the scallop border count to stay divisible by 6. To size down (30 to 32 inch bust), remove the outermost motif from Row C on each side so that row is the heart motif only.
Tips
Block every motif before joining β consistent 4-inch squares are what make the diamond panel lie flat.
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap, or use a gentle machine cycle in a mesh laundry bag, and always lay the top flat to dry. Hanging stretches the lace.
Keep your tension consistent across all eleven motifs; a drifting gauge is the one thing that can make JAYG joins pucker.
Store the top folded, not hung, so the straps and lace keep their shape.
