Christmas decorating feels even more personal when a small handmade wreath brings its own color and texture to the tree. I am Amy, and this tiny 8 cm wreath ornament is one of my favorite quick makes: two tightly curled spirals in holiday colors, twisted together like a candy cane, finished with a neat little bow and a hanging loop.

The whole trick is wonderfully simple β€” working 3 single crochets into every chain is what makes each strip curl into a spiral all on its own. Make one spiral in red and one in white, twist them together, sew the ends into a ring, and add a contrasting bow right over the seam. Let me walk you through it.

Materials

  • Cotton yarn (size 2 mm) in holiday colors such as red, white, and green
  • 3.0 mm (5/0) crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle for assembly and weaving in ends

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • sk = skip
  • sc = single crochet
  • slst = slip stitch
  • (3sc) = 3 single crochets placed in the exact same stitch

Gauge & Size

  • Finished size: 8 cm in diameter
  • The pattern uses US crochet terms
  • Color ideas: red and white spirals with a green bow, or green and white spirals with a red bow
  • Optional extras: mini craft bells, or small beads sewn on as tiny ornaments

Wreath Spirals

Make 2 spirals per ornament, for example 1 red and 1 white.

Step 1 – Foundation: Start with a slip knot and ch 61.

Step 2 – Row 1: Sk the first chain from the hook. Work (3sc) into each of the remaining 60 chains. (Stitch count: 180 sc)

Placing 3 single crochets into each of the 60 chains is what naturally makes this piece curl into a tight spiral. Keep the 3-sc placement consistent across the foundation chain so the curl develops as intended.

Step 3 – Finishing: Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Step 4 – Second spiral: Repeat Steps 1 through 3 using your second yarn color so you have two separate curly pieces.

Before moving on, check that both pieces have developed their curled shape.

The Bow

Make 1 bow in a contrasting color.

Step 1 – Foundation: Start with a slip knot and ch 10.

Step 2 – Row 1: Sk the first chain from the hook, and work 1 sc into the next 9 chains. (Stitch count: 9 sc)

Step 3 – Rows 2-5: Ch 1, turn your work, and place 1 sc in each of the 9 stitches across. (Stitch count: 9 sc per row)

Step 4 – Row 6 / Border: Ch 1, then slst evenly around the entire perimeter of the piece. Fasten off, leaving a very long tail, approximately 8-10 inches.

Step 5 – Shaping: Using your fingers, pinch the center of the rectangle to form a bow shape. Thread the long yarn tail onto a yarn needle, wrap the tail tightly and repeatedly around the pinched center to secure the bow, and knot it at the back.

Finishing & Assembly

Step 1 – Twisting: Take your two completed spiral pieces, such as one red and one white. Hold the ends together and gently twist them around each other so the spirals interlock completely, resembling a candy cane. Keep the colors visible as you work around the piece.

Step 2 – Joining: Curl the intertwined piece into a circle. Using a yarn needle and the leftover yarn tails, sew the two raw ends of the twisted piece securely together to close the wreath shape. Weave in and trim any excess yarn tails from this join.

Step 3 – Bow placement: Take your completed bow and sew it directly over the joined seam of your wreath. Positioning the bow over the seam hides the joining point and establishes the top of the wreath at the same time.

Step 4 – Hanging loop: Attach your yarn to the top-back of the wreath, just behind the attached bow. Ch 35, then slst back into the same starting stitch at the base of the chain to create a closed loop. Fasten off and weave in the final ends.

Your crochet wreath ornament is ready to hang on the Christmas tree as a colorful handmade holiday decoration.

Tips

  • Keep the 3-sc placement consistent across the whole foundation chain so both spirals curl evenly.
  • Check both spirals have curled before you twist them together β€” that curl is the whole shape of the wreath.
  • Change the color combinations to give each wreath its own holiday look, and add mini bells or beads for extra sparkle.
