I just adore this sunshine bumble bee baby dress set! It has a sweet black bodice, a flouncy golden yellow shell stitch skirt that swishes perfectly, a Peter Pan collar with scalloped edges, and matching booties and a headband with a little bow. Those cheerful yellow and black stripes capture pure joy, and it makes the most wonderful baby shower gift.

We will build the dress in logical pieces. The bodice uses simple single crochet throughout and is worked as flat panels we seam together, then we pick up stitches at the waist and work the shell stitch skirt in rounds. The collar, sleeves, headband, and booties are all small, satisfying pieces that come together at the end.

The sizing covers newborn to 3 months, with the 3 to 6 months size in parentheses throughout. The finished dress measures approximately 11 inches from shoulder to hem for the smaller size and 12 inches for the larger size.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (6 sc)

Rows 2 to 60: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (6 sc each row)

The piece should measure 14 inches. Fasten off, leaving a long tail, and sew the short ends together to form a loop.

For the bow: chain 7 and work 16 rows of 6 sc each. Pinch the centre tightly and wrap it with a 10 inch length of Colour A yarn, secure it at the back, and sew the bow to the centre of the headband.

Booties Pattern

Make 2. Using Colour B, make a magic ring.

Round 1: 6 sc in ring, join. (6 sc)

Round 2: 2 sc in each st around, join. (12 sc)

Round 3: (Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) 6 times, join. (18 sc)

Round 13: Ch 1, sc in first 8 sts, (sc2tog) 3 times, sc in last 8 sts, join. (19 sc)

Join Colour A and work 1 round of sc for the cuff edging. Fasten off. Add yellow satin ribbon bows to the front of each bootie.

Finishing & Assembly

Weave in all ends. Block the pieces gently if you like, especially the skirt, to open up the shell stitches. Sew the buttons to the right back panel, aligning them with the buttonholes on the left panel.

For the waistband, thread the black satin ribbon through the BLO round, weaving in and out, and tie it in a bow at the centre front. If you are using bee buttons or appliques, sew them evenly spaced along the ribbon. Always make sure any small embellishments are attached very securely for baby safety.

Tips

Work your colour changes on the last yarn over of the stitch before the colour change. This keeps the transitions crisp and clean.

The shell stitch skirt looks complicated but follows a simple rhythm once you get going. After 2 or 3 rounds, your hands will know what to do.

If your gauge is slightly off, go up or down a hook size. A half-size adjustment often solves the problem.

The Peter Pan collar should lay flat against the bodice. If it cups or ripples, check your increase placement in Rows 2 and 4.

Plan for approximately 12 to 18 hours total: the dress takes about 8 to 11 hours, the headband 1 to 2 hours, and the booties 2 to 4 hours. Breaking it into smaller sessions makes the project feel so manageable.
