Round 1: Skip the first two chains and make 2 dc in the third chain. Make 1 dc in the next 8 chains, then 3 dc in the last chain. Continue on the other side by making 8 dc, followed by 1 dc in the last stitch. Finish with a sl st in the second chain of the initial ch-2.
Round 2: Start with 2 chains. Make a dc increase twice, then 8 dc. Make a dc increase three times, then 8 dc. Make a dc increase in the last stitch. Change to yellow yarn and finish with a sl st.
Round 3: Start with 2 chains. Repeat the following pattern twice: 1 dc in the first stitch, followed by a dc increase in the next. Make 8 dc, then repeat the pattern of 1 dc followed by a dc increase three times. Make 8 dc. In the last two stitches, make 1 dc and a dc increase. Finish with a sl st.
Round 4: Start with 2 chains and make 1 dc in each stitch for a total of 34 dc.
Round 5 (Spikes): Ch 1 and make 1 sc. Make 1 sc in the next 4 stitches, changing to blue yarn at the fourth stitch. Make a treble crochet in the next stitch, changing back to yellow yarn on the last pull-through. Repeat the pattern of 4 sc followed by 1 blue treble crochet all around. At the end of the round, make 4 sc and finish with a sl st.
Round 6: Start with 2 chains and make 1 dc in each stitch.
Round 7 (Spikes): Ch 1 and make a sc, changing to blue yarn. Make a treble crochet in the second stitch, changing back to yellow yarn. Make 5 sc, changing to blue yarn at the fifth one. Make a treble crochet in the next stitch. Repeat the pattern of 4 sc and 1 treble crochet for the rest of the round. Make a sc in the last stitch and end with a sl st.
Round 8: Make 1 dc in each stitch.
Round 9: Repeat the pattern from Round 5.
Rounds 10 and 11: Make 1 dc in each stitch.
Rounds 12 and 13: Change to blue yarn for the tail. Make 1 dc in each stitch for both rounds. After finishing Round 13, ch 1, cut the yarn, and hide the tail inside the pouch.
Mouth, Fins & Strap
Mouth: using pink yarn, make 10 chains and form a circle with a sl st in the first chain. Glue the mouth onto the pouch.
Fin (make 2): with blue yarn, make a slip knot and ch 5. Skip the first two chains and make a dc in the third chain. Make 1 dc in each of the next two chains. Ch 2 and sl st into the same stitch. Leave a long tail for sewing onto the pouch. The fins are sewn onto Rounds 5 and 6.
Strap: with blue yarn, make a slip knot and chain 70 chains. Use a needle to attach the strap by weaving it in and out of the top round of the pouch. Tie the ends together with multiple knots.
Finishing & Assembly
Attach the safety eyes, glue on the pink mouth, and sew the two fins onto Rounds 5 and 6, one on each side of the pouch. Weave in and hide all remaining ends inside the pouch so the inside stays neat for your essentials.
Tips
Change colour on the last pull-through of the stitch before, as the pattern does for the spikes β it keeps those blue spikes crisp against the yellow body.
Use stitch markers at the start of each round; the spike rounds are much easier when you can see exactly where each round begins.
Try different yarn colours for a whole school of pufferfish pouches β they make such fun gifts!
